Introduction

Welcome, Newhall residents, to a whimsical tale of gardening adventures! Throughout January, our green-thumbed heroes battled mischievous winds, pursued a fly-tipping bandit, and pruned their way to a magical spring display. So, grab your imagination and let’s embark on a journey through our Head Gardener’s Diary for January 2025, aka Diary DOAM!

The new year kicked off with the removal of the Christmas tree at New Ground, which looked stunning this year with decorations from Newhall Primary Academy. However, we’ve faced challenges keeping the tree straight due to high winds, prompting us to explore alternative solutions for the future.

Rose pruning happens in Pearl Drift Square and beyond!

Our annual rose pruning across the site commenced early this month, setting the stage for another beautiful display later in the year. We invested significant time in January tending to edging borders and paths, as well as carrying out essential pruning tasks to ensure a polished appearance at Newhall.
  • Resident Note: Did you know that Newhall has deep roots in agriculture, with a history that includes cultivating roses and other crops? You can see some of the beautiful roses from Newhall’s farming past in Pearl Drift Square and Rose Crescent

Fly-Tipping

Unfortunately, we’ve seen a high incidence of fly-tipping during January, which has diverted our attention from some of our spring and summer preparations.

For residents living in apartment blocks, disposing of items outside the designated bin or bin store areas constitutes fly-tipping. It’s important to note that this is classified as a block-specific issue rather than an estate-wide concern. In such cases, our Estate Manager collaborates with the respective managing agents of the block to address and resolve the matter effectively.

Pruning Fruit Trees

Our team has spent some time focusing on pruning fruit trees and bushes to maximize crop yields, as well as cutting back perennials, grasses, and smaller shrubs to maintain their shape.
  • Resident Note: Did you know that we have foraging locations in Newhall, where you can find edible plants? You can find these in Apple Tree Walk and Hazlenut Walk. There are also hedgerows rich with blackberries, usually between August and September.

One Leaf at a Time!

You may have noticed the Majestic Landscaping Team collecting leaves from all over Newhall, to transform the fallen leaves into nutritious leaf mulch, creating a sustainable and eco-friendly solution for the gardens.

By collecting and shredding leaves, we reduce waste while providing Newhall planting with a natural source of nutrients, improving soil structure, and suppressing weeds. Join us in our mission to promote sustainable gardening practices, one leaf at a time.
